Digital Rights Management (DRM)

Progress has designed its own Digital Rights Management tool to protect and secure delivery of all Messaging software. It will require a new method of activation of all users, whether upgrading from an older version or installing new.

Progress's new DRM will replace HASP by Aladdin for IIM V2.0.8 and forward.

Note: Please visit progress.com for more information on managing licenses, and customer assistance.

New in version 2.05

Progress Instant Messaging integrates with Microsoft® Office XP products by using Smart Tags. IIM Smart tags are person's names or email addresses that are associated with an IIM contact. Microsoft Office automatically recognizes smart tags in any Office document.

To implement Smart Tags register the imclientst.dll (regsvr32 imclientst.dll).

An essential part of deploying smart tag add-ins is registering DLLs correctly. Smart tag recognizer and handler DLLs register with Office by writing their locations in the registry. On a per-machine basis (which means for all users of a particular computer), register smart tag recognizers and action handlers in the following directories:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\Smart Tag\Actions\{6B173677-3FB3-4166-A9CA-713C15758B00}

Add the string value IMClientST.StAction with no value.

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\Smart Tag\Recognizers\{05879876-CA61-4A0C-8D3B-95013E7B1DC5}

Add the string value IMClientST.StRecognizer with no value.

Special Notes / Known Issues

Special Notes

When upgrading the IM Server to a new version, all IM Clients MUST be updated to that version, too. In other words, when you upgrade the server, you MUST upgrade the client, too.

NT Database users:
When using the IM Server with Windows NT authentication database and specifying an NT domain other than the local computer, the local computer MUST be in the specified domain.

If you need to go through a firewall, Progress Instant Messaging (IIM) accepts connections only on TCP Port 5177. IIM Clients receive messages on TCP Port 5178.

Known Issues

Default user options cannot be overridden if you are not using Progress IM user database.

Product Description

Progress Instant Messaging is a network-based Instant Messaging Client/Server system. All instant messaging network traffic passes through the local server which has the ability to send and receive traffic from other servers through the Internet.

Progress Instant Messaging provides standard instant messaging functionality. It allows you to:

Progress Instant Messaging is targeted for business use. It meets the needs of businesses by providing local control of instant messaging, the ability to log instant message conversations (optionally), and secure network traffic.

Progress Instant Messaging provides its own user management system or can be used with Progress iMail Server, Windows NT and LDAP user databases.

Installing

To begin using Progress Instant Messaging, you must install both the server and the client applications.

  1. Install the Server on a PC that is connected to your Local Area Network.

Installing Progress's Instant Messaging Server is a fairly typical installation, and the entire process can be completed in less than ten minutes.

Note: The server must be administered locally. The Progress IM Server must not be installed on a network remote drive.

    Things to Know

    • If you must go through a firewall, Progress IM accepts connections only on TCP Port 5177.
    • When using the Progress IM Server with Windows NT authentication database and specifying an NT domain other than the local computer, the local computer MUST be in the specified domain.

    Server Installation

    Before installation, note the following:

    • Log on to Windows 2003 Server and 2008 as a system administrator to install the software.
    • Windows Windows 2003 Server and Windows 2008 Server are supported.
    • During installation select one of the following user databases:
      • Progress Instant Messaging database
      • Windows NT user database
      • Progress iMail Server database
      • Any LDAP database

If you select the Progress IM database, Windows NT database or an LDAP database, Progress IM will use your PC's official hostname (from the DNS entry) as the messaging address.

Example: If the hostname is pc.domain.com and you add a user named fred, Fred's messaging address will be fred@pc.domain.com.

Selecting Progress iMail Server database then the messaging address will be the same name as the mail domain address.
