Ipswitch Instant Messaging is a network-based Instant Messaging Client/Server system. All instant messaging network traffic passes through the local server which has the ability to send and receive traffic from other servers through the Internet.
Ipswitch Instant Messaging provides standard instant messaging functionality. It allows you to:
Ipswitch Instant Messaging is targeted for business use. It meets the needs of businesses by providing local control of instant messaging, the ability to log instant message conversations (optionally), and secure network traffic.
Ipswitch Instant Messaging provides its own user management system or can be used with Ipswitch IMail Server, Windows NT and LDAP user databases.
Installing
To begin using Ipswitch Instant Messaging, you must install both the server and the client applications.
Installing Ipswitch's Instant Messaging Server is a fairly typical installation, and the entire process can be completed in less than ten minutes.
Note: The server must be administered locally. The Ipswitch IM Server must not be installed on a network remote drive.
Things to Know
Server Installation
Before installation, note the following:
If you select the Ipswitch IM database, Windows NT database or an LDAP database, Ipswitch IM will use your PC's official hostname (from the DNS entry) as the messaging address.
Example: If the hostname is pc.domain.com
and you add a user named fred
, Fred's messaging address will be fred@pc.domain.com
.
Selecting Ipswitch IMail Server database then the messaging address will be the same name as the mail domain address.
Install Ipswitch Instant Messaging server by launching the Ipswitch Instant Messaging Server executable file and following the on-screen prompts.
Step-by-step instructions
To install the server, complete the following steps:
1. Click the Ipswitch IM Server executable file. The installation wizard process begins. The Welcome screen displays. Click Next.
2. Select or enter the Destination folder. (This is where the application will be loaded.) Click Next.
3. Select or type the Program Group. (This is how it will be listed in your Windows Start Menu.) Click Next.
4. Select a Database type:
Choose Ipswitch IMail Server, Windows NT, LDAP, or use Ipswitch Instant Messaging for user authentication and administration. Enter the required information and Click Next.
Note: Ipswitch IMail Server is not available if Ipswitch IMail Server is not installed on the local computer.
5. The set up Complete screen displays. Click Finish.
6. The Ipswitch Instant Messaging Server starts.
Note: Once the installation process is completed, the Ipswitch Instant Messaging Server is started.
Note: During the initial installation of the Ipswitch IM Server, the client executable is stored in the server's root folder.
Preparing for Client Installation
Client Installation
Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 are supported.
Step-by-step instructions for standard installation
To install the client, complete the following steps:
Click the Ipswitch IM Client executable. The installation wizard process begins. The Welcome screen displays. Click Next.
Select or enter the Destination folder. (This is where the application will be loaded.) Click Next.
Select or enter the Program Group. (This is how it will be listed in your Windows Start Menu.) Click Next.
The Set up Complete screen displays. Click Finish.
You may, if you choose to take advantage of an available silent installation process, automate the execution of the IM Client installation by creating a batch installation file. This process runs the IM Client set-up without end-user input.
The IM Client will be installed to the default locations:
Target Directory Folder: C:\Program Files\Ipswitch\IM Client
Program Folder Folder: Start > Programs > Ipswitch IM
How to run the IM Client install with no user input:
From a DOS prompt, launch the IIM Client executable: I:\imclient.exe -s
Ipswitch Instant Messaging follows standard uninstall procedures. Use uninstall Wizard or Add/Remove programs in the Windows control panel.
