How do device count limits work?
Beginning with WhatsUp Gold 12.3 and higher, you cannot manage more devices than your license agreement allows. Here's how it all works:
: A device that exists on multiple maps as a copy (displaying the "shortcut" icon
) counts toward the total device count only once.
- If the number of devices being monitored is below the number licensed, you can add additional devices, up to the licensed limit.
- If the number of devices being monitored is exactly at the limit, you cannot add additional devices to the database without first deleting a number of devices equal to the number you want to add.
- If the number of devices being monitored is greater than the licensed limit, the polling engine will disconnect and monitoring will stop. This particular state occurs only if you upgrade from a previous version where the number of devices being monitored exceeded the licensed limit, or if you restore a database that contains more devices than the license allows. In this case, you can either upgrade your license to a level sufficient for your monitoring needs, or delete enough devices to come into compliance. Either way, WhatsUp Gold polling engine will begin monitoring within an hour or you can restart the WhatsUp Gold polling engine to start polling immediately.
Device count FAQs
How is a device counted in WhatsUp Gold?
A network device is any asset or object (physical or virtual) attached to your network that has at least one IP address. Devices discovered by WhatsUp Gold, and then added to the list to be monitored, are counted towards your software license device limit. Ipswitch does not restrict licenses by the number of interfaces, ports, or services running on a device.
During discovery, WhatsUp Gold classifies devices by physical representation. What does this mean in WhatsUp Gold?
As an example, a router that has more than one IP address is counted as a single device. A server (with an IP address) with 7 virtual servers running (each with an IP address) is counted as 8 devices.
If I copy a device from another group and the shortcut icon
appears, does this count as one or two devices?
Shortcuts do not count as separate devices, so this would only count as one device for your device count limit.
If I add a device a second time and no shortcut symbol appears, does this count as one or two devices?
This counts as two devices.
I want to monitor multiple network interface cards on a single device. How many devices are counted?
If you add multiple network interface cards to a single device, it counts as one device.
: You can add additional interfaces to a device. Right-click a device, select . Click to add additional network interfaces.
