Upgrading MOVEit Transfer or Automation

Upgrading MOVEit Transfer or MOVEit Automation requires that you review all of the applicable prerequisites, pre-upgrade tasks, upgrade tasks, and post-upgrade tasks.

Note The upgrade process requires downtime. Plan and test your upgrade in advance to help ensure a smooth upgrade.

Warning! MOVEit Transfer database schema customizations are not supported. If you change the database ("db") name or add schema, indexes, or tables, the MOVEit Installer will not expect manual changes and will revert them if possible. Backup any customizations before you run the MOVEit Transfer installer.

Backup

System backup: Perform a full backup of your system before you upgrade.

Perform pre-upgrade tasks

  • Check installation prerequisites. You must meet the minimum installation prerequisites.
  • Upgrade your operating system to the latest supported level.
  • Upgrade your development software to the latest supported level.

Upgrade

Database update: Upgrades often require updates to the underlying database. This can be time-consuming if you have a large log table or if the drive is heavily fragmented.

  • Microsoft SQL Server databases: The upgrade process requires an account with db_owner permissions to the database. The database user account that was originally created by the MOVEit installer has these permissions.
  • MOVEit Transfer only. Windows Service user credentials. Enter the Windows Service user credentials when prompted.

Perform post-upgrade tasks

  • Account sign in: After upgrading, sessions may need to be rebuilt. MOVEit Automation and Transfer will automatically rebuild the session when you sign in to the account again. The amount of downtime required to rebuild the session varies depending on your environment and database size.
  • MOVEit Transfer only. Additional Server Hardening: The upgrade process does not prompt you to run SecAux (security wizard). For more information, see Additional Server Hardening.
