Run Discovery

Layer 2 Network Discovery scans your network for devices, using the protocol(s) and settings you choose. After devices are found, you may view new discovery results in the console.

The Discovery Status/Summary area provides information on the status of discovery scans, both while discovery is running, and when it is complete.

Discovery Status. Displays the status of the discovery scan.
The following is a list of the most common status messages.
- Discovery is not running. Indicates that the discovery scan has not been started.
- Discovery is running. Indicates that the discovery scan is in progress.
- Discovery is being canceled. This can take several seconds. Indicates that the discovery scan has been manually cancelled.
- Discovery is complete. Indicates that the discovery scan is complete. The other status messages in the Discovery Status/Summary area will reflect the results of the discovery scan.
Elapsed Time. While the discovery is running, displays the elapsed time since the beginning of the discovery scan. When the discovery scan is complete, Elapsed Time displays the total time taken to complete the discovery scan.
Device Count. As the discovery scan is running, displays the number of devices found since the beginning of the scan. When the discovery scan is complete, displays the total number of devices discovered during the scan.

To perform a network scan, select the Discovery Settings that identify the section of the network you want to discover:

Start. Click to start the discovery process using the selected Discovery Settings profile.
New. Click to use the Network Discovery Setup wizard to define a new profile for Discovery Settings.
Edit. Click to edit an existing Discovery Settings profile.

Discovering Devices

As the network discovery scans the network, it provides feedback about the latest device it has discovered and the discovery phase.

Discovering Devices. Indicates the devices discovered and shows that the engine is gathering data from IP devices on the network.
Merging Devices. Indicates that the discovery phase is complete and that the engine is consolidating the device information that has been collected.
Processing Connectivity. Indicates that the discovery engine is building the topology model from the collected data.

Click OK to view the results of the discovery. The Device Categories appear.
