Adding New User and User Rights

User and User Rights can be enabled based on assigned user group or individually using the Add New User dialog.

User rights govern the actions WhatsUp Gold users can perform. Any user who has been granted the Manager Users right or belongs to a group that has this right can manage user rights.

Caution: When creating an account for a novice user, do not grant all user rights. An inexperienced user with too many user rights may make inappropriate selections that accidentally interrupt network monitoring. In the case of a new user, we recommend that you restrict the account to only those rights that new users need to gain familiarity with the application. Grant additional rights as the user gains confidence and application knowledge.

The following table lists and describes each of the user rights:

Access Discovery	Devices	Enables users to access the Discovery tab. Granting users access to the Discovery tab also enables users to discover network devices, define device roles that help identify specific device features, and add devices to WhatsUp Gold for monitoring.
Manage Devices	Devices	Enables users to add new devices and edit existing devices in the groups to which the user has access. Note: A user must have this right to view and hear Web Alarms. Note: A user with this right can assign script monitors from the library and edit their polling values.
Manage Device Groups	Devices	Enables users to create, edit, or remove device groups on the network.
Administer Alert Center Thresholds	Monitoring	Enables users to resolve or acknowledge Alert Center threshold alerts.
Configure Actions	Monitoring	Enables users to create, edit and remove actions on devices in the groups to which the user has access.
Configure Passive Monitors	Monitoring	Enables users to create, edit and remove passive monitors on devices in the groups to which the user has access.
Configure Scripts	Monitoring	Enables users to a create, edit and remove device-specific active and performance script monitors as well as script-based actions. Please note, disabling the Configure Scripts user right blocks the creation of script based components when monitoring applications.
Configure Action Policies	Monitoring	Enables users to create, edit and remove action policies on devices in the groups to which the user has access.
Configure Active Monitors	Monitoring	Enables users to create, edit and remove active monitors on devices in the groups to which the user has access.
Configure Performance Monitors	Monitoring	Enables users to create, edit and remove performance monitors on devices in the groups to which the user has access.

User Rights for WhatsUp Gold Distributed or MSP editions

When using WhatsUp Gold Distributed or MSP editions, make sure that Access Remote Reports is selected on the Central Site for each user that you want to provide access to the Remote Site reports. Also, make sure that you select Configure Remote Servers if you want a user to be able to access and change options in the Configure Remote Servers dialog. This dialog provides a list of all of the Remote Sites that have connected to the Central Site. You can view and edit two important settings in this dialog:

Accept remote site connection. Allows authorized users to enable or disable accepting connections from Remote Sites. This option is checked by default. The primary reason to clear the option is if you need to disable the Central Site from accepting any connections from this Remote Site. For example, this option could be helpful if one of the Remote Sites connected to the Central Site has an unusual amount of activity and is using too much bandwidth between sites. This option lets you temporarily disable a single Central Site from accepting remote site connections until you determine what the problem is.
Local device. Allows authorized users to select a local device to associate with the Remote Site. Click the browse (...) button to select a device. This device is often the computer that is running the WhatsUp software on a Remote Site. Associating a local device allows you to view the device status from the Remote Site, keeping you informed about the connection status with the Remote Site. It also provides easy access to the Network Tools for the local device you selected.

Advanced User Rights Settings

When any group under Assigned User Group is enabled at left, the corresponding user rights associated with that group are automatically enabled at right. You can then enable additional user rights beyond those which were inherited individually. Please note, inherited rights enabled based group membership cannot be disabled unless the user is removed from the group.

Important: Depending on the specific configuration of user rights, group assignment(s), and authentication method, it may take up to five minutes for changes to be reflected.
