This document contains information about the Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook V2.0 for WS_FTP Server.
The Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook is an application that lets users easily and securely send Ad Hoc Transfer packages to recipients through Microsoft Outlook. Once the plug-in is installed, users can send a message with file attachments the same way they would using Ad Hoc Transfer via WS_FTP. Recipients will receive an email with a link to connect to the WS_FTP and download the files you've sent.
The installer prompts you to download .NET Framework 3.5 from the web and install it if it is not already installed on Windows. You can also manually install it.
The installer automatically installs the redistributable during the plug-in installation. You do not need to download anything from Microsoft.

Recipients can download files using a web browser supported by the parent Ad Hoc Transfer server.
After a user installs a Microsoft Office Service Pack (SP1 on Office 2010; SP2 on Office 2007) on a computer on which the Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook is already installed, the plug-in is disabled when the user opens Outlook again. To fix the plug-in, users must re-enable the IpswitchOutlookPlugin COM add-in in Outlook. See the Ipswitch FT Knowledge Base for more information.
Alternately, users can uninstall and reinstall the Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook. See the Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook Installation Guide for more information.
After one user on a multi-user computer uninstalls the Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook, the other users on the computer will see a Microsoft Office Customization Installer error message when they open Outlook and can no longer use the plug-in, since Outlook automatically disables it to prevent the error from happening again. There are two things that administrators can do to prevent this error from affecting all other users on a computer:
See the Ipswitch FT Knowledge Base for more information.
This is a known issue in which a security setting in Internet Explorer automatically increments the download count before the user can actually download the file. We recommend increasing the user's file download limit.
See the Ipswitch FT Knowledge Base for more information.
This issue does not affect other browsers.
If a user tries to send a secure transfer message that exceeds the user's quota, the message will stay in the user's Outbox. If an Administrator adjusts the quota limit on the server so the user can send the message and then the user reconnects via the WS_FTP Connector (see the Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook Help for more information), the new settings takes effect and all new messages within the new quota limit send normally. However, the existing message in the user's Outbox will hang for 6 hours unless the user manually resends the message.
Users might encounter an issue when sending secure transfer messages. A send will fail if the user:
The send fails and an error message appears that begins with: No SMTP Address found for: <user> (<email_address>) ...
To prevent this error, users can either:
Users cannot repair a silently installed Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook with the WS_FTP plug-in installer executable (.exe) file. Users should repair installations from:
Users cannot download files larger than 2GB from the Ad Hoc Transfer web interface due to an ASP.NET limitation. Therefore, Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook users should not upload any individual files larger than 2GB.
See the Ipswitch FT Knowledge Base for more information.
If Ad Hoc Transfer packages are sitting in users’ WS_FTP Outbox folders instead of being sent, you might need to set the Ad Hoc Transfer module session timeout at 300 seconds or greater.
See the Ipswitch FT Knowledge Base for more information.
After sending a secure transfer, a user might encounter a situation where one or more file uploads fail. When viewing Pending Transfers from the WS_FTP Connector (right-click the WS_FTP Connector icon in the notification area and select Pending Transfers from the menu), if the Last Error is XFTERROR_MISMATCH_IN_HASH_VALUE
, this means that there is a problem with the user’s network, specifically the connection to WS_FTP Server. For instance, users experiencing this error might:
The user should resend the message to upload the file again. If the user continuously encounters the error, try examining and reconfiguring the network to optimize traffic from the user's computer.
See the Ipswitch FT Knowledge Base for more information.
Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook users connecting to an IMAP email server with Outlook 2010 experience an issue where they cannot view Ad Hoc Transfer package information for messages they sent 4 hours after sending the messages. This is due to a problem with the way Outlook 2010 stores sent message information in Outlook so that the database cleanup routine that the Outlook plug-in runs deletes the message’s Ad Hoc Transfer information.
See the Ipswitch FT Knowledge Base for more information about fixing this issue.
When sending emails using RTF via Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook, certain elements in the email signature might display incorrectly after the message is sent. Using a different message format (such as HTML) corrects this problem. Microsoft recommends that you use HTML instead of RTM due to its non-proprietary nature.
See Change the message format to Rich Text, HTML, or plain text (Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010) in the on-line Microsoft Office Help for more information about changing the message format.
When sending emails using RTF via Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook, Outlook sends vCards in the email message as .vcf file attachments through the WS_FTP server rather than the body of the email. To avoid this issue, users should send secure transfer messages using HTML format.
See Change the message format to Rich Text, HTML, or plain text (Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010) in the on-line Microsoft Office Help for more information about changing the message format.
Users should select the email account with which they want to use the Ad Hoc Transfer Plug-in for Outlook and ensure that it is the default email account in Outlook. If a user decides to turn a different account into the default email account, the Outlook plug-in loses all history and logs associated with the previous account and cannot send any pending secure transfer messages.
