Monitoring System Parameters

To monitor what's happening with the operating system on the SQL server, we'll create a monitor called "SQLSystem" and add several parameters. The purpose of this monitor is to give an indication of the general state of the system on which your SQL server is running. To this end, we check thresholds for the CPU, Memory, and System parameters.

  1. If you're unsure how to start, see the steps in Configure an SQL Monitor.
    • When you get to the Monitor/Service Properties, select the CPU, Memory, System parameters. Make sure these items have a check in the box to the left. You need to clear the selections for the other parameters and also for the other services.
    • Click the CPU parameter to select it, then click Configure. The CPU Threshold dialog box appears. Enter an appropriate threshold, then click OK.
    • Click the Memory parameter to select it, then click Configure. The Memory Threshold dialog box appears. Enter an appropriate threshold for the amount of free memory, then click OK.
    • Click the System parameter to select it, then click Configure. The System Thresholds dialog box appears. Enter a appropriate threshold, then click OK.
    • When finished, click OK to add the SQLSystem monitor to the Monitors & Services dialog box.
  2. Add the "SQLSystem" monitor to your SQL server device.
  3. You can now configure an action to tell you when the SQLSystem monitor is down, and when it comes back up.
