Authentication Database. Ipswitch IM Server A server is a program running on a networked computer that processes requests from a client program, which is usually running on another networked computer. The client and server communicate using a protocol. For example, an FTP client communicates with an FTP server using an FTP protocol. includes a native user management system, (IIM Ipswitch Instant Messaging is one component of the Ipswitch Collaboration Suite. IIM enables teams to communicate instantly with groups around the world or around the corner, and can be installed behind a firewall so interoffice communications never leave the office. database) but it can also access IMail, LDAP Short for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, a set of protocols for accessing information directories. LDAP is based on the standards contained within the X.500 standard, but is significantly simpler. And unlike X.500, LDAP supports TCP/IP, which is necessary for any type of Internet access. Because it's a simpler version of X.500, LDAP is sometimes called X.500-lite. Because LDAP is an open protocol, applications need not worry about the type of server hosting the directory. and Windows NT user databases. Select one of the following from the list box to authenticate and manage your users:
Configure. Click this button to configure your authentication database choice. If you choose Ipswitch's Instant Messaging as your authentication database, the Configure button will not be enabled.
IIM. Select this option to use the Instant Messaging database as your authentication database. See Managing Users for detailed information on how to manage users using the integrated Ipswitch Instant Messaging user database only. If you are using Ipswitch IMail Server, LDAP or Windows NT authorization, select the appropriate link below for directions on how to manage your users.
Note: Using an external database to authenticate IIM users will prevent you from having to enter and maintain user data in multiple locations.
IMail. Select this option to use an existing Ipswitch IMail user database to authenticate IIM users. Click the Configure button.
NT. Select this option to leverage the user information from Windows NT, 2000, XP, or 2003 to authenticate Ipswitch IM users.
LDAP. Select this option to use an existing LDAP user database to authenticate Ipswitch IM users. Click the Configure button.
Log Events To. Choose one of the following from the list box.
No Log. Select this option to turn off event logging.
SYSMMDD.TXT. Select to send event information to a file of this name, where MM is the month and DD is the day the log was written. This file is stored in the Spool directory. This is the default setting.
App Log. Select to send information to the Windows Application Log (viewed with the Windows Event viewer).
Log Server. Select to send event information to the log file indicated on the Logging tab.
Log Server IP. If you choose to log events to the Log Server, this text box is enabled. Enter the IP address All hosts on the Internet are identified by a unique numeric code, called the IP address. 156.21.50.1 is an IP address. The Domain Name System is used to map the IP address to a name. of your log server.
Log Directory/Browse. Enter or click the Browse button to indicate where you want to save logged IM Server activity information and conversations.
Store Conversations For. Enter the number of days you want the Ipswitch Instant Messaging Server to retain your users' IIM conversations in the Conversation Store. The system's default is set to 7 days. There is a maximum limit of 32,767 days.
Note: If the number of days is not set to at least one, Ipswitch IM Server will not store conversations.
Check for Dropped Users After. Enter the number of minutes between system checks for broken connections.
Thread Pool Settings
Thread Threads are one way for a program to split itself into two or more simultaneously running tasks. Many operating systems, programming languages, and other software development environments support what are called "threads" of execution. Threads are similar to processes, in that both represent a single sequence of instructions executed in parallel with other sequences. (The name "thread" is analogous to the way that a number of threads are interwoven to make a piece of fabric). Pool Size. Enter the base number of threads that the server will use to process requests and execute network tasks. The default setting is 20, and the maximum is 1000.
Thread Burst Max. Enter the maximum number of burst threads that the server will create. The default setting is 50, and the maximum is 1000.
Thread Burst Timeout. Enter the amount of time, in milliseconds, that the base thread pool will wait before it starts creating burst threads. This is the length of time you want to pass before an unused thread destroys itself and frees up network or OS resources. The default setting is 2000, and the maximum is 37,767.
Client Update Settings
Client Update URL Abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of document and other resources on the World Wide Web. The first part of the address indicates what protocol to use, and the second part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. For example, the two URLs below point to two different files at the domain pcwebopedia.com. Path. Enter the desired path you will use to download a newer version of the IM Client network system. During the logon process, the client checks the server to ensure its version matches the server's current version. If the version numbers don't match, the client downloads and installs the file. If you don't want to use the Client Update feature, leave this field empty.
Update Clients. Click this button to let users download a newer version of the IM Client network system. Using the same path assigned in the Client Update URL Path text box, this feature forces users to download and install the newest IM Client during their next IM logon. Clicking Update Clients causes the following message to display: "Users will be forced to update their clients the next time they log on."
Save. Click to save your settings. An "Update Successful" message and the time of the update appears.
