What's new in version 2.06?^
Ipswitch Instant Messaging now allows users to export conversations to RTF files, thus making them available for archiving and searching.
The new Instant Messaging Server 2.06 will require customers to reactivate with new license keys. To obtain a new license key, call Customer Service at 781-676-5700 or, via email, at http://www.ipswitch.com/support/email_service.asp .
What's new in version 2.05? ^
Ipswitch Instant Messaging integrates with Microsoft® Office XP products by using Smart Tags. IIM Smart tags are person's names or email addresses that are associated with an IIM contact. Microsoft Office automatically recognizes smart tags in any Office document.
To implement Smart Tags register the imclientst.dll (regsvr32 imclientst.dll).
An essential part of deploying smart tag add-ins is registering DLLs correctly. Smart tag recognizer and handler DLLs register with Office by writing their locations in the registry. On a per-machine basis (which means for all users of a particular computer), register smart tag recognizers and action handlers in the following directories:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\Smart Tag\Actions\{6B173677-3FB3-4166-A9CA-713C15758B00}
Add the string value IMClientST.StAction with no value.
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\Smart Tag\Recognizers\{05879876-CA61-4A0C-8D3B-95013E7B1DC5}
Add the string value IMClientST.StRecognizer with no value.

Special Notes ^
When upgrading the IM Server to a new version, all IM Clients MUST be updated to that version, too. In other words, when you upgrade the server, you MUST upgrade the client, too.
NT Database users:
When using the IM Server with Windows NT authentication database and specifying an NT domain other than the local computer, the local computer MUST be in the specified domain.
If you need to go through a firewall, Ipswitch Instant Messaging (IIM) accepts connections only on TCP Port 5177. IIM Clients receive messages on TCP Port 5178.
Known Issues ^
Product Description ^
Ipswitch Instant Messaging is a network-based Instant Messaging Client/Server system. All instant messaging network traffic passes through the local server which has the ability to send and receive traffic from other servers through the Internet.
Ipswitch Instant Messaging provides standard instant messaging functionality. It allows you to:
Ipswitch Instant Messaging is targeted at business use. It meets the needs of businesses by providing local control of instant messaging, the ability to log instant message conversations (optionally), and secure network traffic.
Ipswitch Instant Messaging provides its own user management system or can be used with Ipswitch IMail Server, Windows NT and LDAP user databases.
Installing ^
To begin using Ipswitch Instant Messaging, you must install both the server and the client applications.
Installing Ipswitch's Instant Messaging Server is a fairly typical installation, and the entire process can be completed in less than ten minutes.
Note: The server must be administered locally. The Ipswitch IM Server must not be installed on a network remote drive.
Things to Know
- If you must go through a firewall, Ipswitch IM accepts connections only on TCP Port 5177.
- When using the Ipswitch IM Server with Windows NT authentication database and specifying an NT domain other than the local computer, the local computer MUST be in the specified domain.
Server Installation
Before you install the Server, note the following:
- You must log on to Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 as a system administrator to install the software.
- Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 are supported.
- During installation you will select a user database to use:
- Ipswitch Instant Messaging database
- Windows NT user database
- Ipswitch IMail Server database
- Any LDAP database
If you select the Ipswitch IM database, Windows NT database or an LDAP database, Ipswitch IM will use your PC's official hostname (from the DNS entry) as the messaging address.
So, for example: if the hostname is pc.domain.com and you add a user named fred, Fred's messaging address will be fred@pc.domain.com.
If you select the Ipswitch IMail Server database, the messaging address will be the same name as the mail domain address.

Preparing for Client Installation
- Before you can begin installing the IM Client on your users' computers, you must assign or arrange for each user to logon, and you must decide how you will do the actual installation.
- Create a user logon ID and Password. (Or, ensure a user ID has been created or you've pointed to another user authentication database.)
- Determine how you will handle the installation.
- E-mail: Send the user his or her logon ID and password information, and tell him or her where and how to download the application.
- From the user's workstation: Install from a central network location or from the CD. Supply the user with his or her logon ID and password.
