Fixed in WhatsUp Gold v14.1
Actions
- Corrected an issue where email actions using AUTH were issuing HELO then EHLO. Changed the SMTP code to not send HELO if the extend EHLO is issued.
- Added a warning message clarifying that WinPopup actions cannot be used on Windows Vista or later, as net send command is not supported by those operating systems.
Activation
- Corrected an issue where offline activation did not create the
license.ofa
file.
Active Monitors
- Corrected an issue that caused the Flow Custom Alert to give the reverse direction from receiver to sender after selecting "sent" traffic.
- Corrected an issue that caused the Process Monitor to display an error when bad/incorrect CPU or memory data was returned by the target device.
- Updated the TCP/IP Monitor to prevent a failure polling devices that respond to the polling request with initial data, but then do not send any additional data within one second. The timeout for this additional wait is controlled via a new IntermediaryTimeoutSec registry key.
- Updated the VoIP Configuration Utility to properly flag the monitor as requiring credentials. This allows the Active Monitor Library's "Test" feature to work when testing the VoIP Active Monitor against a device.
- Added APC UPS MIB file (
PowerNet-MIB.txt
is now included in \Ipswitch\WhatsUp\Data\Mibs
) to the WhatsUp Gold MIB file collection.
Alert Center
- Updated Alert Center Service to write an error message to the Windows Event Viewer's Application Log if the service is unable to start because of missing or incorrect database requirements. The Netflow and NFArchive databases are required to exist in all WhatsUp Gold installations.
- Corrected an issue where Group Read access rights were previously required to view data in Device Thresholds workspace report.
- Corrected an issue where resolving multiple items in a threshold could lead to duplicate resolve entries in Item History report.
- Corrected an issue where the Alert Center - Performance Memory Utilization threshold sometimes displays Infinity %.
- Corrected an issue where Alert Center did not handle special chars "< and ' in Comment field when acknowledging or resolving, yet exported the file correctly.
- Corrected an issue where Alert Center web server port settings always defaulted to port 80 regardless the port number that user entered during install.
- Corrected an issue that caused the Alert Center Service to fail to restart after a system reboot.
Bulk Field Change
- Corrected an issue that caused the Bulk Field Change Up and Down Dependency dialog to display the data in the comment field incorrectly.
- Corrected an issue with the Bulk Field Change for performance monitors wherein "Custom Active" was listed as an option for interface utilization without including any user interface for setting the custom filtering criteria.
Database Configuration Tool
- Corrected the Database Configuration Utility to properly create and update databases when installing or upgrading on a system that has short file name paths (sometimes know as "8.3 format" or "DOS format" paths) disabled.
Discovery
- Corrected an issue where IP addresses listed in the SubnetSkipList should not be included as part of the MaximumNumberAddressPerSession count. Discovery will now not count IP addresses added to the discovery skip list when evaluating the maximum number of addresses allowed per scan session.
- Corrected an issue that caused the Discovery service to crash as a result of an invalid data type that was returned for sysUpTime.
- Corrected an issue on the NmConsole that caused all devices in the Add Device to WhatsUp Gold dialog to remain selected even after deselecting all devices and attempting to select individual devices.
- Corrected an issue that caused Discovery and Single Device Discovery to not apply FTP, Exchange, or HTTP Content active monitors.
- Corrected an issue that caused the Discovery service to crash after updating a device role to include attributes with blank values.
- Corrected an issue where the Discovery Console did not display an error message when attempting to start a discovery using an invalid host file.
- Corrected an issue where Discovery did not find the SNMP information during a device scan using SNMPv3 credentials.
- Corrected an issue where a failed active monitor (Ping) was added to a device when using the option Use advanced ping during a Single Device Discovery scan.
- Added an option to specify authentication credentials in the scheduled discovery email options.
- Added progress feedback for scheduled discovery email testing.
- Corrected an issue that could cause the Discovery service to not automatically start after reboot.
- Corrected an issue in the web interface that caused discovery to always attempt to resolve the hostname of a new device, even when the "Add the device immediately without scanning" option was enabled.
- Corrected an issue where SNMP Smart Scan discovery was not excluding the
127.0.0.0/8
network and was adding the devices to the scan list.
Install
- Corrected several typographical errors in the Failed to Launch SQL Server Express Edition Setup dialog.
- Corrected an issue that caused silent install to fail during a new installation as the result of a problem on the Admin Password dialog.
- Installing, upgrading, and repairing a WhatsUp Gold installation no longer overwrites previous installation logs
Miscellaneous
- Corrected various usability, user interface, and documentation issues.
Mobile Access
- Corrected an issue where the WhatsUp Gold Mobile Access device list was missing in the map view image on Safari browsers.
NmConsole
- Corrected an issue that caused a "web server not enabled" message when restarting the web server with HTTPS enabled.
Performance Monitors
- Corrected an issue that would not allow the CPU Utilization Monitor to be enabled on a Net-SNMP Server.
- Corrected an issue where the default CPU performance monitor always reports CPU load as 0% for Cisco wireless access points.
Recurring Reports
- Corrected an issue where NetFlow workspace reports that include the
www.png
favicon (used for Unknown, and for the majority of Senders and Receivers reports) were not passing the image to the recurring report.
Reports
- Corrected an issue in the State Change Timeline Report, where any monitor with a state change that starts or ends, but does not wholly exist during the selected time period, does not appear in the report.
- Corrected a SQL error issue that occurred when viewing the Flow Monitor's Top Senders and Top Receivers workspace reports after upgrading from a prior version.
- Corrected an issue that occurred from a MIB browser error "Could not poll the specific device..." if you attempt to add an object ID at the Configure SNMP Values dialog using a device that has a name which cannot be resolved to an IP address. The MIB browser now can get the IP address for the computer name from the database.
- Corrected an issue that caused the Date/Time picker, in web interface full reports, from displaying the wrong date if DD/MM/YY regional settings were used.
- Corrected an issue that caused the Flow Monitor icon to display next to a device even when Flow Monitor is not enabled in the license file.
Web Interface
- Corrected an issue that caused the APC UPS Performance Monitor Timeout field to display the wrong information.
- Corrected an issue that caused the memory utilization workspace reports to show 100% utilization on devices that did not have a total size value.
- Corrected an issue that caused the Device toolbar and context menu "Browse" option to resolve incorrectly.
- Corrected an issue that occurred when a user has the "Manage Workspace" rights and gets an error when navigating to the Manage Workspaces dialog.
- Updated the Device SNMP Details Workspace Report to allow more OIDs to be added to the workspace report's configuration. This prevents an issue that caused the workspace report to display no content if too many OIDs were added to the configuration.
- Corrected an issue where the WhatsUp Gold web interface allowed devices to have no IP/hostname configured in certain instances.
- Corrected an issue where the Web Performance Monitor did not title graphs correctly.
Web Server
- Corrected User Access Control (UAC) issues that caused an "access to registry key denied" error.
- Corrected an issue where WhatsUp Gold resolved to an invalid URL.
WhatsConnected
- Corrected an issue that caused WhatsConnected XML files to be incorrectly upgraded when upgrading from v12.4 to v14.0. An upgrade from prior versions of WhatsUp Gold now correctly updates the WhatsConnected settings files to prevent an XML error on launch.

: Make sure that you have a large capacity drive selected for data storage. The data files for WhatsUp Gold can reach a maximum size of 22 GB.
: During the initial installation, databases are created for WhatsUp Gold Flow Monitor. These initial databases are limited in size, but are increased the first time the Flow Monitor collector initializes. If at least 16 GB of disk space are available when the collector initializes, the maximum size of the Flow Monitor databases is increased to 4 GB each (16 GB total including transaction logs). If less than 16 GB is available, the maximum size of the Flow Monitor databases is limited proportionately to the amount of free disk space. If your license includes WhatsUp Gold Flow Monitor, we strongly recommend that you verify that you have at least 16 GB of free disk space before installing.
- Click . The Choose Destination Location dialog appears.

Installing using Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008
You can use an existing Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 to store the data collected by WhatsUp Gold. To do this, these requirements must be met:
- Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 English must be installed on the WhatsUp Gold host computer or another computer.
: Make sure that the "master" database for the existing SQL Server database instance that is hosting the WhatsUp database is configured to use case-insensitive collation.
: WhatsUp Gold does not support non-English versions of Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
- Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 must be configured to allow WhatsUp Gold to authenticate.
- Microsoft SQL Server must be configured to have a user account that meets the following requirements:
- Full administrator privileges to Microsoft SQL Server, not just the WhatsUp Gold databases. WhatsUp Gold only supports accessing the database via an account with full administrator rights. WhatsUp Gold does not support using a limited access database user account.
- User's language is set to
(United States) English
. This can be set in the properties for the login used by WhatsUp Gold.
If you need assistance configuring or verifying these prerequisites, contact your database administrator or refer to the Microsoft SQL Server documentation.
To install WhatsUp Gold using an existing Microsoft SQL Server:

Server_Name>\<Instance_Name>
.
: If you cannot remember your database server's hostname, click to see a list of all database servers detected on the domain. Database servers to which you can connect but which are not configured on the same domain as the computer where you are installing WhatsUp Gold are not shown. The Browse dialog scans your entire domain, so it may take some time before showing you a list of database servers.
- Select the appropriate authentication method for your database server.
- If your database server is a member of a domain and is configured to accept Windows user names, select . The user whose credentials you use to run WhatsUp Gold must be a member of the same domain as the database server.
- If your database server requires SQL Server authentication, or if the Windows user account under which WhatsUp Gold runs does not have access to the database server via Windows authentication, select , then enter the correct and .
- Click . The installation program attempts to validate the credentials you entered and checks for the existence of WhatsUp Gold databases on the database server. If WhatsUp Gold databases are found on the database server, the setup program alerts you and asks if you want to continue.

Installing optional plug-ins
The files for WhatsUp Gold optional plug-ins are installed automatically with Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold v14.1. Your license file determines whether or not you can access a plug-in.
To update your license or to purchase additional WhatsUp Gold plug-ins, visit the MyIpswitch portal.
Additional installation notes for WhatsUp Gold
- When upgrading from a previous version to 14, information may not display correctly in the WhatsUp Gold web interface. This may be caused by browser caching issues. Clear the browser page cache to correct the issue.
- The Telnet protocol handler is disabled by default in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. In order to use the Telnet tool in WhatsUp Gold, you need to re-enable the Telnet protocol. For more information, see Re-enabling the Telnet protocol handler in the Help.
- If you upgrade from a previous version of WhatsUp Gold and are running IIS 7 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 with a non-administrator account, you must change to an administrator account.
Additional installation notes for WhatsUp Gold Flow Monitor plug-in
Flow Collector Service port number
The default port assigned to the Flow Collector Service is 9999. During installation, Flow Monitor automatically creates an exception for this port on the Windows Firewall if the firewall is enabled. If you change the default port number from the default setting, you need to change the exception port on the Windows firewall to the new port number.
sFlow Configuration
WhatsUp Flow Monitor now supports sFlow version 5. For more information about configuring sFlow, see sFlow Configuration for Flow Monitor.
Additional installation notes for WhatsUp Gold VoIP Monitor plug-in
The following overview steps are required to implement the WhatsUp Gold VoIP Monitor, refer to Using WhatsUp Gold VoIP Monitor for detailed instructions:
- Configure the Cisco source and destination devices for IP SLA UDP Jitter operations.
- Install and configure the WhatsUp Gold VoIP Monitor.
Troubleshooting
Potential SQL Server Express installation errors
- DO NOT Use Terminal Services or Remote Desktop for the installation.
- Check other services that may be running and stop these services during the install operation. These services include:
- Microsoft SQLServerAgent (for the "
WhatsUp
" instance) - Microsoft COM Transaction Integrator
- Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC)
- Microsoft Message Queuing
- Microsoft Search
- MSSQLServerOLAPService
- If there was a previous, non-default installation of WhatsUp Gold or WhatsUp Professional that has been removed, a "WhatsUp" Data Source (DSN) may still exist. Remove the WhatsUp DSN from the Data Sources (ODBC) Control Panel and restart the install.
- We do not recommend that you install Microsoft® SQL Server® 2005 Express Edition (and consequently WhatsUp) on a domain controller. The WhatsUp application and its SQL instance should be installed on a member workstation.
Configuring the firewall to allow WMI traffic
WhatsUp Gold uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to monitor and restart NT Services. For each device that is assigned an NT Service Active Monitor, you must supply the Windows credentials. Also, when creating a Service Restart Action, you must supply Windows credentials for each Action. Credentials must have administrative permissions on the remote server. Local accounts with credentials that match remote accounts are no longer required to monitor remote servers.
Credentials are configured in the WhatsUp Gold Credentials Library and used in several places throughout WhatsUp Gold. They can also be associated to devices in , or through .
The use of WMI could have some implications if target devices are behind a firewall. To successfully monitor and/or restart NT Services, you need to modify firewall settings so that:
- The RPC port (135) is open for connections.
- The DCOM port range is defined and open for connections.
For more Troubleshooting information, see the Troubleshooting section in the application Help or User Guide.
Known issues in v14.1
The following are known issues in WhatsUp Gold v14.1:
About Dialog
- The console About Box does not list the number of devices exported by WhatsConnected when using an evaluation license.
Active Monitor
- The Active Monitors Library in the console allows you to create active monitors with the same name; the web Active Monitor Library does not.
- To use the SQL Query Monitor to monitor a MySQL database, you must first download and install the MySQL .NET connector. Because of compatibility issues with later versions, only MySQL version 5.2.5 .NET connector is supported. This connector is located on the WhatsUp Gold website. This link downloads the
mysql-connector-net-5.2.5.zip file
. Once downloaded, extract the MySQL.Data.msi
and run the MySQL Connector Setup utility by double-clicking on the MySQL.Data.msi
icon. On the screen, select and click . The MySQL .NET connector is installed at the following location: C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Connector Net 5.2.5.
After the .NET connector has been installed, restart WhatsUp Gold.
Alert Center
- Alert Center Home page report data does not load when sent as an attachment in a recurring report. To work around this issue, select the option to send the recurring report as an inline message.
Bulk Field Change
- The Bulk Field Change feature in the console and web interface allows users to add performance monitors to devices that do not have appropriate credentials.
Discovery
- The WhatsUp Gold Welcome Center Setup Assistant does not default the cursor to the first field of the email configuration dialog properly.
- The Discovery Service starts and then immediately stops if the application log is full and is set to not overwrite or overwrite after x days and the log has become full where no new entries can be added. To work around this issue, increase the size of application log and/or allow events to be overwritten (default size is 16MB and old events are overwritten).
- Discovery service will not start if unable to write startup entry to Windows Event Log (Application).
- During a new discovery, WhatsUp Gold checks the maximum number of IP addresses (MaximumNumberAddressPerSession) before checking the scan exclusion list (SubnetSkipList) sometimes causing Smart Scan to exceed the maximum number of IP addresses per session.
- If device supports SNMP sysName, device display name set to this during discovery, not DNS name.
- Single device discovery in web is not respecting the SNMP retry setting.
Documentation
- The help for the "Visio Export" dialog lists Visio as a device type icon shape option when exporting a device's topology to Visio from WhatsConnected, although Visio is no longer a valid option in the WhatConnected user interface.
- The WhatsConfigured plug-in Help topic Using reversed WhatsConfigured variable names should be titled Using reserved WhatsConfigured variable names.
Flow Monitor
- Flow Monitor does not fully support Cisco ASA 5500 Series routers that use NetFlow Secure Event Logging (NSEL). NSEL does not provide the standard NetFlow information for the amount of data sent or the direction of the data sent. Because of this, Flow Monitor reports will not provide complete information for these devices.
Install
- Silent install is not respecting when a user selects a remote database and instead installs SQL Server Express Edition.
- Silent install is storing the username and password of remote SQL servers, as well as web server credentials, in plain text.
- Silent install will not complete when choosing to install to an existing SQL instance.
Logging
- The entries in the ConfigLog table for WhatsConfigured do not expire and are not removed from the WhatsUp Gold database. Users can perform a TRUNCATE ConfigLog to clear the table if it grows too large.
NmConsole
- There is no error message on the Manage Web Server dialog, in the WhatsUp Gold console, when the same SSL and web server port numbers are entered.
Reports
- Recurring report emails cannot be read by Microsoft Outlook 2007. Outlook 2007 uses a different HTML rendering engine than previous versions of Outlook, and this engine does not support advanced HTML features required by the recurring reports emails. To use recurring reports with Outlook 2007, include the report as an attachment.
Passive Monitors
- Windows Event passive monitors (for example, Start/Stop Service) do not work for monitors with the "Type" condition created or changed through the web interface. When this configuration exists, you cannot assign this monitor to a device and get events that match your chosen criteria. As a workaround, use the console to set up passive monitors with events.
Task Library
- WhatsConfigured task names exceeding 50 characters and descriptions exceeding 150 characters cannot be saved to the Task Library; no error is displayed when the library fails to save the task.
Task Scheduling
- Although there should be no limit on the number of config file backups allowed to be stored in the WhatsUp database per task, the console is saving the default number of 5 backups when a user specifies a number that includes 10 digits or more (e.g. 100,000). Additionally, the web interface is limiting the number of backup files stored to the database to a maximum of 99 per task.
Web Interface
- On a wireless-enabled installation of WhatsUp Gold, users without Flow Monitor reports permissions are taken to the login screen after clicking the icon displayed next to a WAP device name; no error is displayed to notify the user that he or she lacks the permissions necessary to view Flow Monitor report data.
- When adding a SNMP counters to the Web Performance Monitor in FireFox 3, several RPC errors occur sometimes. These errors typically occur when attempting to connect to the target device via SNMPv3. The errors display after the OID is selected in
DlgMibBrowser.asp
and before the details of the counter are loaded into DlgAddSnmp.asp
. Clicking on the error allows you to add the counter without problems, and data is retrieved in the graph without additional errors. - (Full Reports) - Web users without Access group and device reports rights are taken to the login screen rather than being shown an error message about not having correct permissions.
- (Workspace Reports) - The Device Status workspace report does not always display all active monitors assigned to a device and at times displays disabled active monitors; in some cases it is only displaying 10 monitors when more than 10 are assigned to a device, in other cases it displays monitors that have been disabled on the device.
- When using the Flow Monitor Host Search feature from within the Wireless Monitoring Workspace Reports, selecting an interface from the search list returns you to your Home Workspace, not the Flow Monitor Interface Details View.
- Split Second Graphs on the full reports of WMI-based performance monitors errors on Chinese operating systems.
WhatsConfigured
- The account attempting to connect to HP Procurve devices via either SSH or Telnet should have manager privileges to allow for the correct execution of WhatsConfigured pre-defined scripts. Logging in under an account with operator privileges could cause the scripts to fail.
- When managing Juniper devices with WhatsConfigured, users may need to increase credential timeouts to between 20 and 30 seconds to give the Juniper device enough time for the "commit" operation.
Other
- Internet Explorer may leak handles if the Web Performance Monitor, Web Task Manager, or Workspace views that include a Split Second Graph report are viewed for an extended period of time (more than 12 continuous hours). Restarting Internet Explorer should resolve the issue.
- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is not compatible with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. If you are running SharePoint Services 2.0, you should not upgrade or install Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold v14.1. Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold v14.1 requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and automatically installs this package if not present on the system. For more information about the issue, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is required for WhatsUp Gold 14. If the installation of this package requires a restart to complete, the installation of the WhatsUp Gold software may fail. To avoid this issue, we recommend that you download and install the .NET Framework prior to running the WhatsUp Gold installation program. Please restart your computer after installing the .NET Framework. Go to download the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation program.
OS - Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
- The database backup and restore features in the WhatsUp Gold console have experienced crashes when running in Windows 2008 R2. Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 is currently an unsupported OS in WhatsUp Gold.
