Adding and editing a Ping interarrival jitter monitor

The Ping Interarrival Jitter monitors for variances in results returned from multiple pings to a specified device.

To add a new Ping Interarrival Jitter active monitor:

1. From the WhatsUp Gold web interface, go to Admin > Monitors. The Monitor Library dialog appears.
2. Click the Active tab. The Active Monitor list appears.
3. Click New. The Select Active Monitor Type dialog appears.
4. Select Ping Interarrival Jitter Monitor, then click OK. The Add Ping Interarrival Jitter Monitor dialog appears.
5. Enter or select the appropriate information:
   • Name. Enter a unique name for the active monitor. This name displays in the Active Monitor Library.
   • Description. Enter additional information about the monitor. This description displays next to the monitor in the Active Monitor Library.
   • Hostname/IP Address to Ping. Enter the hostname or IP address of the target device to monitor.

   Tip: You can enter the %Device.Address or %Device.HostName percent variable to configure the monitor to ping the device to which the monitor is assigned.

6. Configure the following settings:
   • Timeout. Specify the maximum length of time in seconds to wait for the ping reply message after sending the ping (ICMP echo).
   • Retries. Enter the number of times WhatsUp Gold attempts to send the ping (ICMP echo) messages.
   • TTL. Enter the number of routing nodes that can forward the ping data before it is discarded.
   • Payload Size. Enter the length in bytes of data to be sent in the ping message and returned in the ping reply message.
7. Specify the conditions by which the monitor should report the host as Down:
   • Jitter is greater than X ms. Enter the amount of time the jitter value must exceed for WhatsUp Gold to report the device to which the monitor is assigned as Down.
   • Interarrival jitter is greater than X ms. Enter the amount of time the interarrival jitter value must exceed for WhatsUp Gold to report the device to which the monitor is assigned as Down.
   • Ignore connection errors. Enable this option to prevent the monitor reporting the device as Down in the event of a connection error.
8. Click OK.
